The story
During a typhoon, Mike's wife Olivia claims miscarriage symptoms and demands he rush to her friend Mason's private club. Still recovering from an emergency appendectomy, Mike cannot go; his father-in-law, Dr. Adler, takes the family's heirloom medical kit and races into the storm, only to die in a highway pile-up. His last words beg Mike to save Olivia's baby.
Grief-stricken, Mike reaches the club and finds Olivia and Mason arm-in-arm, toasting. It was all a game, and Olivia calls his arrival his punishment for being late, splashing wine in his face. When he tells her something has happened to her father, she refuses to believe him, slaps him, and orders him to kneel and apologize to Mason. The crowd mocks him as an ungrateful man who married up.
As Mike's surgical wound bleeds and the room spins, Olivia kisses Mason instead of calling the hospital. Whatever love Mike had for her dies, leaving only his need to make sure her father does not face the end alone.
Opening
I was still groggy from an emergency appendectomy, so my father-in-law answered the phone.
He grabbed the family’s heirloom medical kit and raced into the storm to save the child—but died in a horrific highway pile-up.
By the time his body was brought to the hospital, it was too late. Nothing could be done.
"Mike, you have to save Olivia's baby… If she loses it… she’ll never be a mother again…"
Even in his final moments, my father-in-law only thought of the child in her womb. He died with his eyes wide open, unpeaceful.
