The story
Sloane Hayes returns to New York after five years abroad, bringing with her Silas, an otherworldly artist she met after an accident in the desert. Her fiancé, Julian Thorne, has also come back from a three-month disappearance with a woman named Lila, whom he claims saved his life. Their engagement was arranged long ago, and the merger between their families still hangs in the balance.
Julian asks Sloane to lend Lila clothes and jewelry and to take her under her wing. Sloane refuses, giving her spare pieces to Silas instead. At the Met Gala, Julian parades Lila on his arm while Silas plays the fragile, wounded guest, and the two men circle each other with barely concealed hostility.
As the East Coast watches the Hayes family for signs of scandal, Sloane must decide how far she will let this game run before the contracts are signed.

My fiancé, Julian, returned from his three-month vanishing act with his “true love” in tow.
That’s fine. I also came back with a man who claims he can’t live without me.
When he saw my fiancé, his eyes welled up. He leaned into me, his voice a bitter, fearful whisper. "Sloane, am I... am I making things awkward?
