The Scuba Tank Was Turned Off

Zac's mother has just recovered from a serious illness, so he signs her up for his wife Ruth Quarmby's diving program. But Ruth's mother, Adeline Quarmby, accuses him of favouritism, steals his mother's gear and goes into the ocean with Ruth's young apprentice, Craig Smith. Underwater, Craig secretly turns off a scuba tank. Adeline, untrained, panics and drowns.

At the hospital, Adeline lies in a coma needing surgery that costs two hundred thousand dollars. Ruth refuses to pay, signs a Refusal of Treatment form and throws it in Zac's face, believing the patient is his mother, not hers. Craig, brought along to apologise, jokes that his bag of fast food can double as an ash holder.

Zac cannot reach Ruth all night while she talks Craig through his guilt. When he finally confronts Craig, Ruth shields the apprentice and slaps her husband.
