The story
When the smart lock on his front door dies, Mark calls a locksmith and learns the German cylinder came with six keys: two masters and four secondaries. He and his wife Jessica Carrington each carry one, and three sit untouched in the hallway drawer. That is five. The sixth key has never been accounted for.
Then a security alert shows a tall, thin man avoiding the camera, letting himself in with a key — Kyle Summerton, Jessica's ex, who vanished from their lives three years ago. He entered half an hour ago and never came back out. Jessica arrives flushed and evasive, wearing a camisole and special-occasion perfume Mark has never seen, and insists he is imagining things.
Searching the bedroom turns up nothing, yet the perfume still hangs in the air and a man's trouser leg shows inside a storage bin beneath the bed. Mark sits on the mattress, draws a utility knife, and offers to air out the bedding.
Opening
While he was working on the lock, he made small talk. "Dude, this lock comes with six spare keys. Did you lock all of them inside the apartment?"
I froze.
I've lived in this apartment for three years. My wife and I each have one spare key. The other three were always kept in the hallway drawer.
That makes five total.
So where's the sixth key?
I watched the locksmith work and asked him, "Are you sure there are six?"
"Positive. This German lock cylinder comes standard with two master keys and four secondary keys.
