The story
On the evening of her third anniversary, Nora Mercer watches her husband Carter Harrison receive a photograph from his first love, Serena Cross, in a wedding gown, asking him to marry her. That same night, Carter has divorce papers delivered to Nora’s dressing room. She does not scream or beg. She quietly removes the diamond band he gave her and promises to disappear, so Serena will never know she was there. Carter responds by offering her the East Hampton estate, then adds fifteen million dollars in cash to the settlement.
At his lawyer’s office the next morning, Carter adds two more cars, a Tribeca retail space, and a lifetime Centurion card. Nora signs as Nora Mercer. When Serena arrives at the townhouse with a dozen trunks and demands the primary suite, Nora yields the room, but when Serena takes an emerald necklace and tosses a velvet box into the wastebasket, Nora’s grief hardens into rage. She warns Serena not to treat her home like a place for a feral dog.

On the evening of our third anniversary, Carter’s first love sent him a photograph of herself in a wedding gown.
“The groom bailed. Can you come marry me?”
Carter Harrison stared at his phone. His expression was entirely unreadable when he finally pressed the lock button, the screen fading to black.
