The story
Released from prison, Noah is met at the gates by Chloe, a woman who claims to be his ex-wife and says they agreed to remarry once he was free. He does not recognise her. All he has is a worn diary, and its pages tell him what to do: if a woman says she is his ex-wife, go home with her.
He obeys. In the villa he becomes the good husband and good son, saying nothing as Chloe grows close to his half-brother Leo, and nothing when his mother makes plain she favours Leo. They begin to ask why he has changed, and he cannot answer. The diary is clear: if he is obedient, he can save enough money to leave and find a quiet place to die. They do not know he has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, or that the hate, the love and the memories of them are already gone.
Opening
The day I was released from prison, a woman claiming to be my ex-wife came to take me home.
I flinched away when she reached for my hand.
“I don’t know you.”
The woman’s brow furrowed, as if she thought I was still holding a grudge. “We agreed five years ago. When you got out, we’d get remarried.” She softened her tone slightly. “Mom is getting older. She’s missed you.”
Hearing that, I opened the diary I carried with me.
