The story
Chloe is her mother's "feeding doll." Whenever her younger sister Lily refuses to eat, a freshly cooked meatball is placed in Chloe's bowl, then snatched away the moment Lily craves it. Chloe, the older sister, is told she must be sensible.
One night, the last braised meatball is held to Chloe's lips as bait. She swallows it whole. Her mother slaps her, and the back of her head strikes the corner of the table. Chloe rises from the floor, wanting to apologize, only to see her own body still kneeling there. Her mother leaves her to reflect, and the family goes out for KFC, ignoring the child on the floor.
Chloe floats through the dark apartment, hungry and unable to smell the food she was never allowed. When her family returns, her father reaches out to grab her, and her mother's voice comes from the bathroom.
Opening
I was my mother's little "feeding doll."
Whenever my younger sister refused to eat, my mom would put a freshly cooked meatball in my bowl.
Once my sister started craving it, the meatball would be snatched away and fed to her instead.
My mom always said, "Your sister is delicate. You’re the older sister, you need to be sensible."
