The story
Two weeks before her wedding, Hannah McGraw brings her parents to dinner at her fiancé Derek Matthews's family home in Larkhaven, Franklin, where his childhood friend Paige Bennett is also present. When Mrs. Matthews proposes a numbered-envelope game, Derek draws the highest number and, at Paige's prompting, requests that Paige's parents take the honor-table seats meant for Hannah's parents. He tells Hannah not to embarrass everyone over two seats.
Hannah responds by announcing in the family-and-friends group chat that her parents will not attend the wedding, and neither will she. As relatives react and Derek's family protests, her father finally speaks of the humiliation he silently endured, while Derek offers only to restore the original seating as though granting a favor. Seeing that Derek still believes she is fighting over a chair, Hannah leaves with her parents.
She cancels the wedding and converts the hotel dinner into her parents' thirtieth-anniversary celebration, gathering her transfer receipts and the recording she made at dinner.
Opening
The evening was supposed to be the last planning meeting between both sets of parents, where we would finalize the ceremony and the honor-table seating.
I hadn't expected Derek's childhood friend, Paige Bennett, to be there too.
Mrs. Matthews suggested a little dinner-table game.
Everyone would draw a numbered envelope.
