The story
A month before the SATs, Jenny Reid can see her score floating above her head. Every time she opens a prep book it drops by ten points; every day she skips school it climbs by ten. So she stops studying, and on test day the number glows 1560 — but the score she receives is 500. The 1560 belongs to her little sister Patricia, and as Jenny lies dying after being beaten outside her night-shift factory job, Patricia whispers that she has been controlling the number all along.
Jenny wakes one month before the SATs, the score above her head reading 1300. She burns her practice papers and refuses to study, letting the number rise while Patricia watches for any sign that she still trusts it. Through a hidden camera, Jenny learns the score will detonate once it falls below 1000, and that studying is a death wish. She must find a way to fool the number — and her sister — before the exam, while their parents' favouritism and a grandmother's inheritance hang over everything.
Opening
A month before the SATs, I, Jenny Reid, could see my score.
Literally. It was just floating right above my head. But there was a catch.
Every time I cracked open a prep book, my score would drop by ten points. But if I skipped a day of school? It jumped right back up by ten.
So, I played the system. For a whole month, I barely lifted a finger. And on the day of the test, the number glowing over my head was a solid 1560.
When the scores finally dropped online… I'd scored a 500.
And the 1560? That was my little sister Patricia's score.
