The story
Caleb Vance is celebrated as a boy genius, always first in every exam and always exactly three points ahead of the second-place student. That eternal second place is his desk mate, Liam Scott, who studies relentlessly yet can never close the gap.
Liam alone knows the truth: Caleb has bound himself to a Universal Exam System whose only law is that his score will always be Liam's score plus three. When Caleb is offered a place in the Ivy League Early Admission Program, Liam refuses his own spot, and Caleb, unable to stand alone, turns it down too. The classmates blame Liam, and Caleb pressures him to stay and keep taking exams.
Liam walks out, determined to end Caleb's hold on him for good. At home, a chess game with his father reminds him that no one knows who will have the last laugh until the very end, and he resolves to set his plan in motion.
Opening
My desk mate, Caleb, was hailed as a "Boy Genius."
The reason was simple: in every single exam he took, he secured first place. And every single time, his score was exactly three points higher than the second-place student.
No more, no less. Just three points.
Yes, I was that tragic, eternal second place.
But I knew the truth. Caleb was actually an idiot. He had bound himself to a "Universal Exam System." The system's only law was that his score would always be my score plus three.
