The story
On Valentine's Day, Declan prepares a candlelit dinner and waits for his wife, Adeline, to come home. Instead, she sends a text saying something came up at work. Then he finds a tweet from her secretary, Asher, about a business trip with his boss lady on Valentine's Day, all hotels fully booked, with a photo of a woman in a bathrobe. Declan shares the tweet, and Adeline calls to scold him for being petty. He texts back that he wants a divorce.
Adeline returns at 2 AM with no guilt, offering a tie Asher bought for Declan. When she pulls him up, he falls and hits his waist, injured seven years ago while saving her from a fire. A drawer holds his early-stage stomach cancer diagnosis and two tickets to Iceland. When Asher calls, hurt at a bar, Adeline rushes out, leaving Declan on the floor. He calls an ambulance himself.
At dinner, Adeline tells strangers she is dating Asher and calls Declan her security. When his stomach pain worsens and he begs her to take him to the hospital, she accuses him of faking. He tells her he has stomach cancer, but she does not believe him.
Opening
On Valentine's Day, I set up a candlelit dinner, eagerly waiting for my wife to return from work.
At 9 PM, she texted me: “Something came up at work. Don't wait for me.”
Moments later, I stumbled upon a tweet from her secretary, Asher.
“On a business trip with the boss lady on Valentine's Day, and all the hotels are fully booked... How awkward...”
