The story
After Dominic is paralyzed from the neck down in a car crash, his parents Richard and Helen decide that fairness demands a terrible price. They take a claw hammer to their younger son Mike's knees, crippling him so he can sit in a wheelchair beside his brother, and a back-alley doctor makes sure the bones never heal. When Mike begs his aunt Beatrice for help, she calls him selfish and hangs up.
Confined to a wheelchair that mirrors Dominic's, Mike endures his brother's cruelty, his mother's confiscated pain pills, and a damp basement room while his parents collect praise from neighbors for never abandoning their boys. Every complaint is met with the same answer: Dominic's suffering is a tragedy, and Mike's is only selfishness.
Then a fire breaks out in the house, and the flames creep toward the two wheelchairs.
Opening
They spent a small fortune customizing a wheelchair for me that was an exact replica of my older brother’s, pushing us out to the garden every day to bask in the sun. Passersby praised them, calling them saints for refusing to abandon their two disabled sons. My father would gently wipe the drool from the corner of my mouth, and my mother would slice apples, dividing them into mathematically equal halves.
But no one knew how we got here.
It happened three days after my brother was paralyzed from the neck down in a car crash.
