The story
When Northwood Elementary announces a Harvest Potluck, each student must draw a fruit to bring. Kate Miller's daughter Sophie draws durian, a fruit that can cost hundreds of dollars and cannot possibly be shared among forty children. Kate sends mangosteens instead, a reasonable substitute.
Her teacher, Mrs. Albright, calls that evening, furious that Sophie was the only child who failed to bring the required fruit. She demands twenty durians as an apology to the class, threatening consequences if Kate refuses, then hangs up. Sophie overhears everything and begs her mother not to make her apologize.
That night, Kate orders twenty cases of Musang King durian. By morning, a truck unloads a mountain of boxes at the school gates, and the whole street stops to stare.
Opening
The school potluck required fruit. My daughter, unlucky girl, drew the durian.
I didn’t buy it. In response, her teacher called me. “Because of you, your daughter now owes the class twenty durians.”
I said nothing. I just went online and ordered twenty cases.
When the truck pulled up to the school gates, the twenty large boxes were stacked into a small mountain.
The teacher stood there, clutching the delivery invoice, her eyes wide with terror.
