The story
At her coming-of-age ceremony, the heir to the Silver Serpent tribe fails to shift, growing only a few ugly scales. Her fiancé Kael Mercer and her best friend Vivian Hart defend her before the crowd, and she clings to their loyalty while her foster father Rowan Vale lies in a coma. To save him, she must become chief.
But behind the tent flap, she overhears Kael and Vivian in the moonlight, speaking of taking her place and of her as a burden to be set aside. When they demand the chief's seal, she refuses, and Kael tears it from her chest, leaving her bleeding and imprisoned. As consciousness fades, she remembers Rowan's parting words about something inside her more important than the chief's seat.
Fire was never meant to kill her. It was meant to burn away the shackle sealing her bloodline.
Opening
My fiancé and my best friend stepped in front of me and roared at the crowd.
"Shut up, all of you! Anyone who dares mock the heir is making an enemy of us!"
While I was still downcast over my failure to shift, I overheard my best friend complaining to my fiancé that someone with inferior blood like mine had no right to hold on to the position of heir. She promised to help him take my place.
Before long, rumors swept through the tribe that I had betrayed the Beast God and was nothing but a lowly lizard.
