The story
On the morning of a family trip, Yesenia wakes to an empty house. A recalled message from her sister Cynthia reveals the truth: the family moved up their departure and left her behind, and they share another group chat that excludes her. Her brother Gordon says to forget her, and her mother's apology rings hollow.
Yesenia changes her train ticket and abandons the university she and her childhood friend Zavier had planned to attend together. Then she sees his post: he is off with Cynthia. For eighteen years her family favored Cynthia, and now the one person she trusted is gone too.
When the family returns, her mother scolds her for not cooking, and two free T-shirts are offered as affection. Yesenia finally understands she is the unnecessary one, and quietly resolves that their wish will soon come true.
Opening
On the day of our family trip, I woke up early, only to be shocked to find the house completely empty.
While I was still wondering what was going on, a message from my younger sister, Cynthia, popped up in the family group chat.
"Oh no, I forgot to tell everyone in this group that the departure time had been moved up!"
The next second, the message was recalled.
As I stared blankly at the now-empty chat, I felt my eyes sting.
