The story
Nathan Gallagher runs a small indie game studio. After a three-month courtship, he marries Eleanor Hughes, an adjunct literature professor, certain of his love for her even if her calm acceptance never quite feels like affection. On their wedding night she shuts him out of the master bedroom, and for six months the marriage is little more than two strangers sharing a house.
The strain sharpens at a faculty gala, where her former senior classmate Simon Crawford mocks Nathan's work, and Eleanor says nothing. At a family dinner, her parents Arthur and Margaret Hughes fawn over Simon, who has returned to take a tenure-track post, while Nathan is dismissed as a man with no future. Eleanor's silence and her parents' coldness leave Nathan wondering what he truly married into.
Back home, he slides divorce papers across the kitchen island, and his detached wife looks up in tears.
