The story
In the fifth year of their marriage, Simon converts the family home into a trial-marriage dormitory for his female best friend, Mallory Crane, who claims a crippling phobia of domestic intimacy before her wedding. Simon drafts a thirty-day roadmap for their simulated domestic life, and Elise is ordered to vacate the house she helped pay for, with no calls and no visits. At the county clerk's office, Simon signs the divorce filing without hesitation, treating the mandatory thirty-day cooling-off period as a mere formality he intends to undo once Mallory's therapy ends.
Mallory wears Elise's silver band, moves through her kitchen and bedroom, and is issued a card on the joint account in her own name, while a group thread labels Elise an emotional disruptor barred from contact. Elise retreats to her late mother's dusty apartment, where an old transcript reveals that Gideon Ross never made the wager Mallory once described. She dials his private line and asks whether he is still interested in getting married.
Thirty days of playing house may be all the time she needs to find another groom.
