The story
When Princess Adelina returns to the capital, young Percival of House Arkwright blocks her carriage and boasts that his family's hundred thousand troops will march on the palace. His father, the Grand General, and his sister Cecily only smile indulgently, and the watching crowd begins to whisper of rebellion. Benedict, the unacknowledged bastard son, remembers another life: he once dragged Percival down and saved the family, and was repaid with broken legs and a silk cord around his throat. This time he sips his tea and says nothing.
Yet the boasts keep growing. Percival strikes Benedict's page Theo, then names Lavinia, Benedict's wife and Chancellor Wycliffe's daughter, as the rebellion's banker, and finally claims Benedict is the Prince Regent's favorite who has gathered the King's secrets. Every eye turns on Benedict, and the streets empty around him.
To save himself, he must speak calmly against his own blood while his family's reckless words condemn them all.
Opening
The entire Grand Avenue went deathly silent. I scrambled out, forced him to his knees, and pressed his head to the ground until his forehead was raw and bloody, covering for him by claiming he'd lost his mind.
The princess's expression softened. When the King heard, he only docked Father a year's pay and let the matter drop.
