The story
When Leah Dursley accompanies her husband, Commander Michael Yates, to a remote island posting, a sudden storm capsizes their ship. As the vessel sinks, Michael gives the last life vest to his godsister, Naomi Hollister, while Leah, pregnant and clinging to the railing, is blamed by the other military dependents for the danger they face.
Leah has lived this day before. In her past life, Michael gave her the vest, Naomi drowned, and he later pushed Leah into the sea to die in revenge. Now, reborn into the same storm, she watches impassively as Michael shields Naomi and orders the others into the lifeboats first, leaving no seat for his own wife.
As the water rises and the ship shudders, Leah tears up their marriage certificate and lets go, ready to face death rather than beg him again.
Opening
Out at sea, a sudden storm hits. The ship capsizes and begins to sink.
As the commanding officer, my husband gives the last life vest to his so-called godsister, Naomi Hollister.
I don't cry or scream. I just watch silently as he carefully fastens the straps around her body.
