The story
Zack has married and divorced Lucy Quinn nine times. Each time, she divorces him on a whim, then coaxes him back; he has reshaped himself to please her, believing he owes her for the nine elaborate declarations of love she once staged to win him. This ninth divorce is only a truth-or-dare stunt at a drinking party for her assistant, Steven Zimmer. Sick with fever and ignored, Zack still drags himself to the courthouse, where Lucy jokes about the abandoned-cat effect and bets she can make him propose a tenth time.
At the courthouse, Zack tells Lucy this is the last time and that he will not remarry her. She dismisses his threat, certain he cannot live without her, and Steven pours icy alcohol over him as a joke; when Zack grabs Steven, Lucy slaps him and threatens to livestream his next proposal. Zack repeats that he is finished, and as his coworkers laugh, he walks away from the marriage for good.
Opening
Steven Zimmer, the assistant of my wife, Lucy Quinn, has lost in a truth-or-dare session. Lucy doesn't hesitate to file for a divorce from me for the ninth time.
In the courthouse, I hear the staff member asking Lucy curiously, "Your husband is like a well-trained dog now. You've already married and divorced him nine times! Aren't you worried that your husband might ditch you for real?"
Lucy merely smirks at her. "Do you know that the more ruthless you are when you abandon…
