The story
On Children's Day, a social media post shows Shane Norton spending his birthday with his son David Norton and his first love, Ruth Feynman. Ayla Sanderson quietly likes it, then takes down the balloons she hung for her wedding anniversary. When Shane calls to explain, David's voice rings out in the background, and Ayla says only that she understands.
At home, she no longer fetches slippers or kisses her son. Shane tosses her an anniversary necklace engraved with Ruth's initials, and Ayla drops it in the trash. She walks out into the night, ignoring his threat that she should never return, and drinks with her cousin Celeste Drey until three in the morning.
Shane waits up, disheveled, certain she cannot leave him. David complains that she stinks and that Ruth is nicer. Ayla, who once gave up painting, friends and books for them, no longer wants either of them.
