The story
Isla wakes one morning unable to recall the previous day. Her husband Alex rushes her to the emergency room, but scans and blood tests reveal nothing; doctors call it temporary psychogenic amnesia. When the blackouts return and swallow whole weeks, she keeps the truth from Alex so his university research and thesis are not derailed, and begins a journal recording every detail of their life together, anchoring herself to its pages. Her mind slides further back, until she wakes frozen at eighteen, before she ever met him.
Alex's lab assistant Vivian finds the journal, mocks Isla as a devoted housewife and tears it in half; Alex, believing Isla is inventing an illness to manipulate him, rips the rest to shreds and leaves with Vivian. Isla salvages the scraps and waits, but Alex locks himself in the guest room. Without the journal, she will forget who he is by tomorrow.
Opening
Panic seized me. I lunged, but Alex shoved between us, batting my hands away. "What is wrong with you? It is just a stupid notebook!" He scoffed. "Vivian is right. Why waste time on useless garbage?" Vivian giggled. "It says here you actually sobbed and begged a doctor when she got sick." Alex's face flushed crimson. "Why record every private detail? Scribbling nonsense all day, no wonder you haven't found a job!" Terrified she'd dig up more, he snatched the remaining half, tore it to shreds, and tossed it in the trash.
