The story
For seven years, Sophia has stood beside Liam Sterling, learning his favorite board games and mimicking the way he and his circle speak, certain that devotion would earn her a place at his side. Yet Lyra Kensington, his childhood friend, crosses every line without effort: an alarm clock on their anniversary, extra-small condoms at their engagement party, and now a demand that Liam give her baby a nominal father before he marries Sophia in eight months.
On the drive to a snow-mountain hotel, Sophia rides in the back while Liam and Lyra bicker and flirt as though she never existed. In their room, Lyra pulls a scrap of lingerie from Liam's coat pocket, and when he follows her out over a cockroach, Sophia is left alone with the truth she has been avoiding. Liam offers surveillance footage to prove his innocence, but Sophia no longer wants the wedding or the future he keeps promising.
When Lyra's name is called again, Liam bolts without a backward glance, and Sophia finally understands which seat was never hers to win.
Opening
The day finally came when Liam proposed to me. But just before we were supposed to register the marriage, Liam dropped the truth: “Lyra needs a nominal father for her baby, but I will marry you in eight months.” No one doubts that I would be as devoted as ever to wait another eight months. After all, I’ve already spent seven years by his side. But at that very night, I accepted my family’s plan abroad and vanished from Liam’s world forever.
