The story
Joanne has spent twenty-five years as the invisible architect of her husband Richard's academic career, setting aside her own advanced degrees to raise their children and keep his home. Then, over Sunday dinner, Richard announces he is in love with his graduate protege, Alicia, and wants a divorce. Their grown children, Samantha and Jason, side with their father, praising his new beginning and dismissing Joanne as an embarrassment to his intellectual circle.
When a vision warns Joanne of the bleak fate awaiting her if she stays, she agrees to the divorce and asks only for the deed to the house her grandfather left her. Richard, relieved and smug, signs without a fight, unaware that the property is about to be rezoned for a transit corridor and that a massive buyout settlement is coming.
As Richard and the children toast their triumph, Joanne quietly begins to reclaim a life of her own.
