The story

At a routine business dinner with clients, President Gilbert is handed two bills: twenty thousand for his own table, and two hundred thousand for a meal he never ate. The server insists his father-in-law ran up the tab and promised he would settle it. Gilbert is single and has never had a father-in-law. He refuses to pay and calls the police.

The restaurant manager, Toby Dickerson, arrives and presses him to pay quietly, then claims he has personally seen Gilbert dine there with the man. When Gilbert demands the surveillance footage, Toby says the system has been down. The doors are shut, the clients are held inside, and Toby warns that nobody leaves until the bill is settled.

Gilbert has been recording on his phone. His clients stand by him, and Toby, cornered, orders the guards to strip their luxury watches to cover the charge.

Opening

After the meal, the server handed me two bills. One was twenty thousand for our table. The other was two hundred thousand.

"President Gilbert, this is the bill your father-in-law ran up at our restaurant. He said you'd be settling it."

The server looked at me with a rehearsed smile.

I frowned.

Single. No father-in-law. Never had one.

And a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bill, suddenly handed to me out of nowhere—what exactly was this?

"This bill isn't mine. Whoever ate that meal, you take it up with them. I'm paying for what I ordered."
