The story
A Sunday morning phone call shatters a young office worker's only day of rest. A stranger's voice accuses her of keeping two thousand dollars in phone credit that was topped up to her number by mistake, and demands she transfer it back at once. Her plan costs ten dollars a month; the credit would last her sixteen years. She explains, politely, that the sender should ask the service provider to reverse the transaction. The caller answers with threats.
By noon the harassment has escalated: ninety-nine missed calls, a furious man on the line, and a promise to cave her head in. She blocks the numbers, pulls her SIM card, and tries to salvage her day off. Then the police call. Someone has reported her for fraud, and she is summoned to the precinct, where the couple is waiting to shout accusations in her face.
She has done nothing wrong, yet the mistake of strangers has cornered her in her own home and dragged her before the police.
Opening
All because of two thousand dollars in phone credit, sent to my number by mistake. It ended with me cornered in my own home, my head split open, needing eight stitches to close the wound.
It all started with a phone call at six in the morning on a Sunday.
A woman’s voice on the other end of the line was already barking orders. She’d made a mistake topping up her phone credit.
