The story

A week before her 40th wedding anniversary, Iris finds a diamond ring hidden in Carl's study drawer, engraved for his forever love. She believes it is finally meant for her. Days later, a cancer diagnosis shatters her, and she wanders into a concert hall—where Carl, their son Felix, and her best friend Jocelyn are seated together. Jocelyn wears the ring. They laugh about Iris, mocking her as fit only for the kitchen, and Felix asks whether he should call Jocelyn Mom, revealing he was her IVF baby, not Iris's.

Forty years of devotion collapse in that moment. Iris clutches her cancer report as Carl shoves her, scattering the papers they walk over without a glance. She returns home, sells the house on Central Avenue that was her dowry, and finalizes a divorce agreement line by line, choosing to spend whatever time remains living on her own terms.
