The story
At Blackwood High, Julian Cross is the school's top student, and Autumn is his girlfriend. One night after study hall, Julian sprints across the courtyard, grabs Autumn's wrist in front of stunned classmates, and drags her over the school wall into a waiting taxi, fleeing the city as every light on campus goes dark behind them.
By dawn they reach a small city and check into a budget motel, where Julian seals the door with black tape, saying only that "they like to watch." Then Autumn sees the news: all 5,000 students and faculty at Blackwood High died overnight from catastrophic bleeding, and only the two who skipped the study session survived.
Autumn demands to know what Julian knew and what is hunting them, but he refuses to speak it aloud, terrified that naming it will doom their escape.
Opening
After the evening study session, I was just about to return to the dorm when my first boyfriend, the school's valedictorian and undisputed top student, suddenly tore across the courtyard toward me.
Before I could react, he grabbed my wrist and, in full view of a crowd of stunned students, dragged me into a frantic run toward the front gates.
I exclaimed, "Julian, have you lost your mind? Graduation's six months away. Are you really trying to run off with me now?"
I struggled the whole way, twisting and pulling against him, but his grip never loosened.
