The story
Dylan Woodward's department manager, Derek Pritchard, hands him three hundred dollars to feed twenty people at a department dinner, though Dylan had already secured thirty thousand dollars for a team retreat. Derek intends to pocket the rest and have Dylan cover the difference, even demanding the shopping and cooking happen off the clock.
Dylan agrees pleasantly, then texts the owner, his Aunt Victoria, inviting her to a surprise dinner. She confirms Finance released the money and promises to attend. Meanwhile, Dylan orders cheap meal pouches and frozen chicken legs from local sellers, letting Derek believe he is buying prime beef and live crabs.
When the coolers arrive, Derek grows suspicious about how much Dylan actually spent.
Opening
He grabbed a piece, tasted it, and announced at full volume.
"Dylan, this is good. Way better than anything you'd buy to go with a beer."
Before I could get a modest word out, his tone shifted.
"Perfect timing. The owner isn't coming to the department dinner tomorrow night, so there's no sense throwing money around."
