The story
For four years, Sienna has been the one holding her long-distance relationship together, flying from New York to Seattle every month to see Joey, a doctor she met in college. Now Joey learns about her life only through other people: his friends joke about him being a trophy husband, a photo reveals she cut her hair, and he discovers she is in town only when they collide in a mall.
When Joey grabs her wrist and asks why she never told him, Sienna says she is there for work, not for him. Beside him stands Sophie, a nurse in a matching hoodie, who scolds Sienna for showing up unannounced. Joey asks Sienna to be understanding, insisting Sophie was only being frugal. Sienna pulls her hand free and walks away.
She remembers the nightly calls that Sophie slowly took over, and the hospital stay Joey hid from her, where Sophie played the lady of the house. The old Sienna dropped everything for him. That version of her is gone.
Opening
Lately, Joey had been piecing my life together through the casual remarks of others.
When his friends jokingly congratulated him on becoming a "trophy husband", it finally dawned on him that I had already paid the down payment on a new house entirely on my own.
A group photo posted on my best friend's Instagram was the only way he found out I had chopped off all my hair into a sharp bob.
Even when I flew out to his city for a business trip, he only found out because we literally collided at the corner of a shopping mall.
