The story
Born with a developmental delay, Selly has trailed after the housekeeper's son, Lucas Sanchez, since childhood, begging to marry him. He promised to marry her at twenty-two if her parents poured everything into lifting him up, and they groomed him into the heir of the company. Yet three years and then three more pass, and every time she asks, he puts her off: her mind is only sixteen, he says, and he will marry her when she truly grows up.
On her twenty-eighth birthday, Selly watches Lucas feed cake to her tutor, Tessa Fox, and wipe the cream from Tessa's mouth. Tessa says marriage would only drag down Lucas's career, and Lucas does not deny it. He never corrects the diners who mistake Tessa for his girlfriend, and when Selly cries, he asks when she will ever grow up. What he does not know is that her mind caught up to her age long ago.
At home, Tessa serves her leftovers, and Selly finds a broken acrylic nail in the food. When her mother calls to ask when Lucas will finally marry her, Selly agrees to the match the Gentry family once offered.
