Irvin Henson suffers from anterograde amnesia, and his wife Amber has built her whole life around it. She fills their home with sticky notes, carves reminders into her own skin, and studies neuroscience to find him a cure. Yet he misses their anniversary, her due date, and the drug allergies that once put her in the ICU. She tells herself it is only his illness.

Then his childhood sweetheart Emily Hughes returns from abroad. At the welcome-back dinner, Irvin remembers everything about her: no cilantro, warm water at exactly 40°C, her medication schedule, her fragile stomach. He cuts her steak, drapes his jacket over her shoulders, and forgets the crab in Amber's bowl — and the pregnancy she is carrying. When Amber walks out, Emily coughs, and Irvin turns back.

Alone at home, Amber tears down the notes and falls, losing the baby while Irvin rides the pirate ship with Emily. The person he cannot remember was only ever her.
