The story
Seven years into their marriage, Zack Shaw is recognised by the Shaws as heir on one condition: he must marry his widowed sister-in-law, Wendy Wood, so she can bear the family an heir. Cynthia agrees, on the understanding that Wendy will only use his sperm through IVF. But Zack's visits to Wendy grow from once a month to nearly every day, and he begins coming home later and later to Cynthia and their daughter, Dora.
When Dora sees a photo of her father embracing Wendy, Cynthia realises the man who promised her forever has changed. She buys two train tickets back to Riverton for the day he and Wendy marry, yet Zack insists the divorce talk is only a tantrum and promises to attend Dora's first day of school. Cynthia remembers the cold nights of their early poverty and the humiliation Wendy once inflicted on them both, and sees how much of himself Zack now gives to Wendy.
On the eve of Dora's first day, Zack rushes out to Wendy again, leaving his promise behind.
Opening
Zack kept telling me he would not forget the humiliation Wendy had inflicted upon him, and once he tormented her enough, he would kick her out of the Shaws.
Eventually, he started coming home later and later, giving less and less attention to me and our children.
Six months later, he told the public about his marriage and kept it a secret from me. My daughter saw the photo and asked me curiously, "Why is Daddy hugging Ms. Wood?"
My heart broke for her, and I held my sweet, naive girl.
