The story
Claire grew up alongside Arthur Stevenson, who is now the Lord Chancellor. On the day of the royal physician selection, he disqualifies her over a bit of spilled medicinal residue and gives the place to her younger stepsister, Eleanor Fletcher, telling her a proper lady should not be jealous and willful.
What Arthur does not know is that Claire wanted the post to avoid entering the castle as a royal mistress to the tyrannical King, whose court has seen other daughters die. Her stepmother mocks her, while her father, hungry for advancement, pushes her toward the castle. When Arthur later brings a pie and assumes she will simply marry him, Claire sees a man she never truly knew.
With her departure for the castle only days away, Claire must decide what she is willing to become.
Opening
However, on the day of the royal physician selection, he disqualified me on the grounds that I had spilled a small amount of medicinal residue. Instead, he chose my younger stepsister.
When I asked him why, he looked completely unconcerned. "Your sister wants the position, so what's the harm in a loving older sister stepping aside? A proper lady shouldn't be so jealous and willful. Consider today a small lesson for you."
