The story
A thirteen-year-old boy waits at his mother's office for her shift to end, only to be mistaken for an employee who cost the company a twenty-million-dollar deal. The CEO's secretary, Chase, slaps him, drags him to HR, and turns a growing crowd of onlookers against him.
In the HR suite, Chase and the director, Luke, demand a name, a badge and payment. The boy insists he is only thirteen and that Ms. Ashford is his mother, but Chase calls him a liar, tears a necklace from his neck, and forces him to sign a disciplinary form and a promissory note.
His mother, Victoria Ashford, remains in a board meeting, unaware of what is happening to her son.
Opening
Out of nowhere, the CEO's personal secretary marched up to me, absolutely furious:
"You have some nerve sitting here playing games! Because of your careless mistake, we missed a crucial client email, costing the company a twenty-million-dollar deal!"
"Well? How do you plan to pay us back?"
I blinked, shaking my head in sheer confusion.
"Are you mistaken? I don't work here. I'm just waiting for my mom to finish her shift."
