The story
For a whole year, Faye poured her heart into texting Holden Pierce, the aloof boy her roommate Blakely had gotten a number from outside his frat house. Day by day they traded small details and late-night secrets, until Faye finally dared to ask him to meet. His reply, calling her baby, made no sense — until Blakely walked in with roses and confessed that Holden had always believed he was texting her.
Holden's confessions flooded in, then vanished one by one, unsent. Blakely had given him her real number and told him her old phone was hacked. When Faye sends a single question mark, the message will not deliver: Holden has blocked her. The next morning he waits downstairs, cold and accusing, certain Faye is a jealous liar obsessed with him, and swears he only wants Blakely.
Faye tells him the truth — that she was the one behind the screen all year — but he laughs it off as exactly the lie Blakely predicted. As she walks away, he calls her back only to ask her to carry pads up to Blakely. The last ember of hope turns to ash.
Opening
It took my roommate a whole week of cornering Holden Pierce outside his frat house just to get him to give up his number for me.
To thank her for helping me take that terrifying first step, I drained my entire summer internship savings to buy her the Prada bag she’d been obsessing over.
Right after that, I threw my entire soul into texting Holden.
I agonized over every word. By day, we shared the mundane little details of our lives; by night, we traded our deepest, quietest secrets in the dark.
