The story
When her father Simon Archer brings Candice and her daughter Courtney into the home, he tapes a reward chart to the refrigerator and promises Hazel any wish in the world once she collects one hundred red stars. Hazel swallows every unfairness, folding laundry and scrubbing counters while he takes only Courtney to the theme park, waiting for another ink stamp.
On the night the chart holds ninety-nine stars, her mother Marian's heart gives out. Hazel calls her father to trade her last star for his help, but he accuses her of lying and stays at Candice's family home. At the hospital a doctor tells her no adult can sign the pronouncement of death, and that Child Services or the police must be contacted.
Simon returns with Candice and Courtney, dismisses Marian as a runaway wife, and moves them into the master bedroom, tearing Marian's dresses from the closet while Hazel stands at the threshold.
Opening
He told me that if I collected one hundred red star stamps, he would grant me any wish in the world.
For the sake of that promise, I swallowed every piece of unfairness. Even when he took only Courtney to the theme park, I never threw a tantrum. I stayed behind, folded the laundry, scrubbed the counters, and waited patiently for him to return and press another ink stamp into an empty square.
Yesterday, the chart finally held ninety-nine stars.
And yesterday night, my mother’s heart gave out.
