The story
On New Year's Eve, a sparkler handed to younger daughter Gina sends older daughter Aria into a rage. She screams that her parents are unfair, runs into the night, and is found three days later at a police station, refusing to come home. Her mother, Sarah, tells her that if she no longer wants them, they no longer want her. It is the twenty-eighth time Aria has run away.
At home, Aria's demands continue: a new laptop, a game console, and for Gina to be sent to their grandmother's house. When her parents refuse to send Gina away, Aria declares a hunger strike, certain they will give in as they always have. Her father, David, sneaks her favorite food upstairs, but she throws it to the floor.
Sarah decides that this time no one will indulge her, even as strange noises come from Aria's room upstairs.
Opening
It was New Year’s Eve, and the whole family was outside setting off fireworks.
The trouble started with a single, simple act: I handed a sparkler to Gina, my younger daughter, just because she was standing closer to me.
That was all it took for Aria, my older daughter, to snap every remaining sparkler in the box.
