The story
For ten years, Marta has crossed borders to see her husband Steve, who works in America. Every year she prepares her marriage-based green card application with care, and every year it is rejected. On her tenth attempt, a visa officer tells her the truth: her marriage certificate is fake, and Steve is already married to Mila, his late brother's wife, so that Mila's son David could study in America.
When Marta confronts him, Steve defends Mila and David, and even demands that Marta apologize to them. At dinner, the three leave her with a ten-thousand-dollar bill and a frozen card. But Marta is not the dependent wife Steve believes her to be; she has long held a vast inherited fortune, kept secret under her parents' will.
As the restaurant manager bows to her, Marta decides how to answer the betrayal.
Opening
My husband Steve works in America. For ten years after our marriage, we've maintained a long-distance relationship across borders.
I've been rejected for a green card ten times. On the tenth attempt, the visa officer laid it out for me directly:
"Miss! Your so-called husband is already married! His wife obtained a green card ten years ago! Your marriage certificate is fake!"
