The story
Claudia dies on her birthday, yet no one in her family notices. Her parents and her husband, Edwin Grant, are consumed by preparations for the party of her twin sister, Esme Shaw, while Claudia lies beaten and abandoned in the basement. With broken fingers she sends Edwin the emergency code 9395, the signal they once agreed on, but he dismisses it as a childish stunt and tells her to stop making trouble.
As the celebration begins, Claudia never appears. Her family assumes she is sulking and blames her for ruining Esme's evening, unaware that Esme herself kicked open the basement door and found her sister's body. Only the farewell gift Claudia prepared in advance remains, and when it is seen, the room loses its mind.
A month earlier, Claudia had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, a truth her parents mocked as an act. Now she watches as a soul while those who ignored her prepare to face what she left behind.
Opening
While she was surrounded by people helping her pick out a gown, I was tied up and thrown into the basement.
