The story
A forensic doctor is shopping at a market when she spots human flesh for sale at a butcher's stall. She calls the police, then phones her niece Freya to warn her to stay safe, while coldly dismissing any concern for her own estranged daughter, Aubree. She does not realise that the remains awaiting her examination are Aubree's.
Detective Patrick Cook rushes to the scene, and the two close the market's meat stalls to prevent panic. Days of analysis reveal that only a quarter of the tissue is human, and a scar on the ankle becomes the sole lead. Patrick remembers that Aubree bore such a scar, but the doctor refuses to hear it, still blaming her daughter for her husband Daniel's death years ago.
Then the grandmother reports Aubree missing, and a motel housekeeper's discovery pulls the investigation toward the place where Aubree died.
Opening
She calls the police before contacting my cousin to tell her to stay safe. Her friend reminds her to also pay attention to me, but my mother is scornful. "She can die out there for all I care. I never want to see her again!"
She doesn't know that she's already seen me, though. She didn't recognize her daughter from the pile of flesh that's waiting for her examination.
In the trash bin by the pork stall at the market, that pile of yellow fat resembling chicken fat turned out to be human tissue.
As soon as the report came in, Patrick Cook rushed to the scene.
