The story
Ethan has run procurement at a small firm for five years, sourcing holiday gift baskets through his mother's food processing plant at dead cost. When a new hire, Tyler, accuses him in the work group chat of pocketing an eighty-dollar kickback per order, the boss, Miller, hands the procurement to Tyler with a sixty-dollar budget.
Summoned by Miller, finance director Marcus and HR manager Brenda pressure Ethan to resign over the alleged kickbacks. He refuses to leave with his name stained and demands an external audit, promising to repay any discrepancy tenfold. Until then, Tyler takes over purchasing, and Ethan hands over the archives.
As Tyler collects the records with a smug, sympathetic smile, Ethan wonders what a fifty-dollar basket will do to the stomachs that praised it.
Opening
"Mom, that $588 luxury holiday basket from our factory is amazing this year. Can you give it to me at cost? There are only about a hundred people at my company. You'll only lose a bit on shipping."
On the other end of the line, my mom had no choice but to give in to my badgering.
I sent a "Thank you, Mom" sticker on SnapChat.
Then, I shared the good news in our WhatsApp work group.
