The story
William Hayes wakes in a hospital bed with his left eye bandaged, told by his wife, Dr. Seraphina Thorne, that a car crash on the way to a shooting competition has left him blind. At the winner's celebration, Brad Brown boasts that Seraphina transplanted William's cornea into him so he could stand on the podium, and Seraphina agrees she gave Brad the best of everything. William realises his blindness was no accident.
The ophthalmologist confirms it: his eye was never injured, and Seraphina signed the donation papers while he lay in a coma, claiming he had insisted. Brad, the orphan her family raised as a son, now declares he will wait for Seraphina and marry her, while her father calls William inferior. When Seraphina phones to demand he buy Brad an expensive watch and settle the banquet bill, William refuses to pay another penny for them.
Opening
I woke up with my eyes bandaged. My wife, Dr. Seraphina Thorne, who was my attending physician, told me that my left eye was severely damaged and I was permanently blind.
Meanwhile, Brad had won the gold medal in the shooting competition.
