The story

A young woman learns that her boyfriend Ethan still carries the ghost of a girl who died too young, Seraphina. Determined to compete with the dead, she uses a time machine to become Seraphina's high school classmate at Northwood High, hoping to save her from the edge and then defeat her.

As a transfer student named Lia, she takes the empty seat beside Seraphina, whose controlling mother has isolated her and forced her to give up early admission to Yale. Though Seraphina pushes her away, Lia keeps reaching out, promising to stay and be her friend.

But when Seraphina's classmates turn on her and a ringleader gives a cold command, Lia's mission becomes far more dangerous than she imagined.
