The story
For seven years, Heidi has endured a marriage in which her husband, Chris, has paraded a revolving door of women through their home. Pregnant and near her due date, she is forced to kneel and apologize on behalf of his latest lover, Evelyn, before a major client. The violent motion sends her into early labor, and she hemorrhages during delivery while photos of Chris and Evelyn together spread online.
His sister, Isabella, who once promised Heidi her freedom once the baby arrived, finally agrees she can leave. Yet Chris keeps testing her: he wires money she refuses, brings Evelyn into the villa, and watches for a reaction. When Evelyn stages a knife attack and Chris demands an apology, Heidi turns the blade on her own scarred wrist instead.
Chris notices the old scars but mocks them as a tactic for attention. Heidi counts down the days until she is free, and the pain no longer touches her.
Opening
Seven years of marriage, and my husband had slept his way through half of Hollywood.
I was thirty-nine weeks pregnant when his latest pet, a starlet he was bankrolling, offended a major client at a gala. To save the deal, Chris demanded that I kneel and apologize on her behalf.
I stared at him in disbelief. "I'm pregnant, Chris. How can I kneel? What if I hurt the baby—"
He cut me off, his voice laced with ice. "It's just kneeling.
