The story
After eye surgery, Summer can see the emotional auras radiating from people. Love glows warm orange, but her husband Declan has always emitted a pale, sterile gray — even when he fed her soup in the hospital or held her at night. She told herself he was simply stoic, until the night of her best friend Sophie's welcome home party.
When the banquet hall loses power, Declan shoves Summer to the floor to reach Sophie, and a blinding orange light erupts from him for the first time in seven years. At the clinic, he leaves her bleeding arm to fetch Sophie's keys. The next morning he serves her the sweet vanilla oatmeal Sophie loves, forgetting Summer's own birthday.
As Sophie settles back into their old trio, Summer quietly opens an acceptance email for a London art restoration project — and confirms it.
Opening
1
Ever since my eye surgery, I have been able to see the emotional auras radiating from people.
When someone deeply cares about another person, a warm orange glow surrounds them. I saw it when my neighbor returned from a business trip, his entire porch bathed in a passionate, glowing tangerine. I saw it when the old man down the street bought roasted chestnuts for his wife, a faint, tender warmth enveloping his frail shoulders.
But my husband, Declan, always emitted a pale, sterile gray.
