The story
When a wife learns her husband Jones's terminal cancer diagnosis was a misdiagnosis, she hurries home with the good news—only for the literature professor to hand her divorce papers. He says he has three months left and wants to spend them with the person he truly loves: Douglas, a former student he calls his muse and soulmate. He offers her everything, leaving with nothing.
She signs at once, packs his clothes, and sends him out the door, keeping the misdiagnosis notice in her pocket. During the divorce cooling-off period, she travels and tastes a freedom she never knew, until she happens upon Jones's short videos—and Douglas's.
A marriage built on duty ends, and a woman taught to follow the rules begins to wonder what her own life could look like.
Opening
When I found out my husband Jones's terminal cancer diagnosis was a mistake, I breathed a sigh of relief.
But when I got home to tell him the good news, he handed me divorce papers instead.
"I've settled for you my whole life. Now that I only have three months left, I want to spend them with the person I truly love. Please grant me this final wish."
I stared at the divorce agreement, stunned.
