The story
Down at the harbor they call Dean the Butcher, though the heavy gutting knife he wields has only ever carved out a safe life for his younger brother, Sam. Now Sam is in college, and Dean has kept every promise he made to the woman who once walked away from him.
But Sam is ready to throw it all away for a girl he met online, and the lock-screen photo on his phone stops Dean cold: Audrey Hayes, the same Audrey who left him ten years ago, unable to stand the smell of fish on his skin. Dean drives Sam to the café she chose, meaning to test her first.
A punch lands before any question does, and Audrey pays the stunned room to look away. Dean demands to know why she is circling his family, and when he takes her phone, she tells him the passcode has not changed.

Down at the harbor, they just call me "The Butcher."
Not because I’m a violent man by nature, but because whether it was the local loan sharks, drunks looking for a fight, or deadbeats trying to skip out on their tabs—every single one of them had met the dull edge of my heavy gutting knife.
