The story
For nine years, Lily Scott has lived in a non-cohabiting partnership with Simon Hoffman, raising their daughter Nicole while his family disapproved. When Simon's father dies, the will demands that Simon and Ella Johnson conceive a child so he can inherit the fortune. Lily discovers them together, and Simon promises to marry her once the money is his—but he keeps hanging bells on the door for each meeting with Ella, and the chimes reach ninety-nine. Now Ella is pregnant, and Simon and Ella's engagement party is set for Lily's own birthday.
At a dinner, Simon's ring and a call about Ella's car accident pull him away, and Lily finally stops waiting. At the Hoffman family hospital, Julia Parker sneers that Nicole will drag the family name down and orders Simon to claim Ella's baby. Lily tells Nicole to call him Mr. Hoffman, hands over the bracelet Simon gave her, and walks out.
Back home, Nicole begs for one more birthday with her father, and Lily agrees to ask. On the morning of the party, Simon has not replied, and Nicole waits in her princess dress.
Opening
The first condition in his will was simple: Simon and Ella had to conceive a child.
On the day the child turned one month old, Simon would inherit his father's fortune.
Simon told me this himself—the night I walked in on them tangled in our bed.
Afterward, as he took a slow drag from his cigarette, he murmured, "Lily, just wait a little longer. Once I get the inheritance, I'll marry you."
But he went back on his word.
