The story
Alex is flying home for the holidays with Sarah, his girlfriend of three years, so she can finally meet his parents. When he steps out of his seat to use the restroom, Sarah vanishes. The flight attendant, Jessica, and the passenger beside him, Mr. Peters, insist he boarded alone, and his own parents claim he has never had a girlfriend. Committed to a psychiatric hospital, he dies there.
He wakes again on the same plane, on the same day, with Sarah beside him holding their boarding passes. Determined to prevent history from repeating itself, he photographs everything, posts their journey online, and asks Jessica, Mr. Peters and the whole cabin to witness and bless their trip.
Yet the memory of how easily every witness denied Sarah's existence haunts him. This time, he has proof. But he still does not know why she disappeared, or who made the world forget her.
Opening
When I came out, the woman in the seat next to me was gone.
I called a flight attendant, but she insisted I had boarded the plane alone.
I asked the other passengers. They all said the seat beside me had been empty the entire time.
But I know, I’m absolutely certain, that I got on this plane with my girlfriend. She had just peeled an orange for me, telling me to eat it when I got back from the restroom.
How could she have just vanished?
I stared at the peeled orange on my tray table and demanded they search the cargo hold and the cockpit.
